New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
(NYSDEC) Region 2 Grants

Important news for large and small community groups!  The NYSDEC is holding informational briefings on Community Environmental Grant opportunities for 2008.  ARROW's Sandra Robishaw attended the
Queens meeting in January.  Here is a summary of why anyone with a community environmental concern should get on the NYSDEC mailing list in order to receive guidelines and applications to get funding.

There will be 5  community environmental grants offered by NYSDEC this year.   Deadlines for submission and funding amounts vary for each grant , ranging from $1,000 to tens of thousands.  RFPs will be sent out via e-mail in the next weeks and months.

NYSDEC grants are awarded to both large and small agencies, municipalities, and other groups - even those without 501(C)3 status. In past years, some of the grants have been very competitive, with many applications submitted throughout the large Region 2 district.   However, last year there were not enough applicants for some of the grants.   Arturo-Garcia Costas, Region 2 Public Affairs Manager , whose contact information is below,  is encouraging both large and small community groups and individuals to add their names to the NYSDEC mailing list to receive information about these grants.

The grants encompass a surprising variety of projects, such as  community gardens, green roofs, toxic cleanups, information gathering, education , and seed money for long-term initiatives.  Disadvantaged neighborhoods are the focus of the grants, but the term "disadvantaged" does not refer solely to income level.  Neighborhoods whose residents suffer from bad air quality due to traffic fumes, for example, might fall into the category.

NYSDEC Region 2 staff are eager to give out information  and to increase the numbers of awards in 2008. They will help applicants arrive at and refine projects in order that they may fall within the scope of  the funding.   In other words, its not just - "fill out the proposal, send it in and take your chances."

Below please find contact information for the Region 2 office.   Get your group's e-mail on the NYSDEC mailing list now so that you will not miss this chance to fund your project.
ARROW reminds you - "You have to be in it to win it!"
