ARROW (Astoria Residents Reclaiming Our World) is a community based and volunteer run organization, dedicated to improving the environment of its Western Queens neighborhood. The primary goal of ARROW is to ensure that valuable natural resources are preserved and that public land is used safely and remains accessible to all.
Established in 1991, ARROW continues to pursue its original aims, including:
Providing Environmental Education and Action A crucial goal for ARROW is to preserve the environment through local action. Originally formed as Astoria Residents Recycling Our Waste, ARROW mobilized to start a neighborhood-based recycling program before curbside recycling was available in Queens. After successfully completing this project, ARROW turned its attention to others, such as establishing a community garden, City park and community center (ARROW Park) in Astoria, and launching a Building Materials Reuse and Education Center in Long Island City.
Promoting Community Involvement ARROW encourages community involvement on the part of individuals as well as groups in its administration and its programs. ARROW has recruited hundreds of local participants for its recycling, clean-ups, gardening and educational, artistic and recreational programs.
Building Coalitions Among Local Community Based Organizations ARROW endeavors to work closely with other local organizations and currently has partnerships with several groups in the area, including nonprofits, business associations, schools, and local government officials and agencies.
Encouraging Individual Stewardship of the Neighborhood and the Local Environment ARROW volunteers are empowered to take on local issues in a constructive and cooperative way, promoting feelings of ownership and responsibility for the neighborhood, our city, and the environment.
